DOWNLOAD : Polarkreis Free download and more

"Polarkreis 18 came into being in 2004 and released their self-titled debut album in 2007, announcing them as a band to watch.
A year on, the European release of album two, 'The Colour of Snow', realized that potential in stunning style,
propelled by 'Allein Allein', which spent five weeks at number one in their home country and breached the top 10 across much of
mainland Europe. The album The Colour of Snow will be released in the UK 3 August."

They have a certain classic a-ha/Alphaville feel to their sound.

DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL : Dandelion Radio

A new discovery for me, and courtesy of Benbecula for the link, Dandelion Radio, if you like things alternative, original, independent and ad free, the station plays a good selection of alternative material (and some very alternative), give the station a listen and see what you think.

NEWS : Benbecula Records

It saddens me to report that as of 1st November, Benbecula Records will be closing its doors and no more releases will take place for the foreseeable future, although the website will remain open and the entire back catalogue will remain available for purchase, to quote their website :

"On 1st November 2009 Benbecula Records will close it’s doors indefinitely, 10 years to the day since it’s first CDR release in 1999. The label will continue to operate on a skeletal basis however no more releases will take place for the foreseeable future. Benbecula Records has been established as one of the most respected Scottish labels, specializing in electronica, down tempo, ambient and freestyle music. It’s cavalier attitude to music and it’s highly popular subscription service has made it unique, quirky and lauded by the press, radio and its peers.

It is with regret that due to a multitude of reasons, that the label will cease any new physical operations on the 1st of November 2009. The website will remain open and back catalogue will remain available.

To celebrate its 10 year existence it is holding a special showcase at it’s old stomping ground, The Wee Red Bar in Edinburgh. With line-up including Christ., Araya and new signing Plum, very special guests to be confirmed plus live laptop and DJ disco into the wee hours. This is the final call and THE FINAL VINYL."

NINE INCH NAILS AND GARY NUMAN AT O2

Gary Numan performed the songs "Cars" and "Metal" with the Nine Inch Nails at the London O2 Arena on the 15th July 2009, below is the performance of "Cars".

I will be going to see Gary Numan at the Manchester Academy as part of his "Pleasure Principle" Tour, I can't wait :).

GEMS OF THE PAST : CHINA CRISIS

TRIVIA : GARY NUMAN

Some you may know and others you may not..................

An ink tracing by Garry Robson of Numan's face on the single "Bombers" sleeve would provide the design for the 1979 reissue cover of Tubeway Army's eponymously-titled debut album.

In 1982 he attempted to fly his single-engine Cessna around the world. He was arrested in India on suspicion of spying. Charges were later dropped.

His song, "Cars," hit the #1 spot in the UK charts in 1979, and went on to hit #9 in the U.S. charts June 7, 1980. In 1996, the song was utilized for an English TV ad (Carling Premium Beer) which renewed its popularity and returned it to the top 20 in England, UK

The soundtrack to the american horror movie 'The Unborn' was never released, but it is available on Gary Numan's instrumental CD, Human, which Numan released in 1995, Gary recorded it with Michael R Smith.

Gary's real name is Gary Anthony James Webb, he was born March 8, 1958

Gary Numan appeared on Robert Palmer's 1980 "Clues" album.

The first chart number one Gary Numan was involved in was 'Are Friends Electric?', the song was taken off the 'Replicas' album under the name of Tubeway Army, but by the time the album was released Numan was already a solo artist in his own right.

In 1976 Numan was in the band 'The Lasers', London punk outfit playing in the standard Sex Pistols-style of the day, Numan and bassist Paul Gardiner would soon depart and put together their own punk band, Tubeway Army.

The album 'Dance' featured guests Mick Karn (bass, saxophone) and Rob Dean (guitar) of Japan, Roger Mason (keyboards) of Models and Roger Taylor (drums) of Queen.

Gary Numan's 'Cars' features in the video-game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Ultravox's Billy Currie appears in the video to "Cars", even though he didn't play on the single.

According to Numan, the lyrics to "Cars" were inspired by an incident of "Road-rage"

The title and cover art of Gary Numans' third studio album "The Pleasure Priciple", were inspired by the René Magritte painting Le Principe Du Plaisir.

Are Friends Electric? is one of Numan's most frequently-covered compositions.

* Generator (featuring Kipper, a Gary Numan band member, and Numan himself on vocals) covered the song in 1994.
* Replicants covered the song on their 1995 album Replicants
* Nancy Boy produced a version in 1995 as a single (several mixes) and on the album Promosexual
* Information Society included a cover on the 1997 album Don't Be Afraid.
* Republica (with a guest appearance from Gary Numan) covered the song on the 1997 tribute album Random along with two other versions by Moloko and An Pierlé, the latter an arrangement for solo piano.
* American rock band Jessica's Crime covered it on their 2000 single Don't Cry.
* The song Feel Alive by Pure Orange sampled parts of this song. While not a cover per se, it is often considered a cover.
* A Groove Armada cover appeared on the compilation album Late Night Tales: Groove Armada featuring Crazy Girl.
* The Gresham Flyers released a version on the B-side to their 2008 single "Factory Records Museum", sung by keyboard player Sharon Leach.
* Weezer also covered the song for release as the B-side to their 2008 single "Pork and Beans".
* Most recently it has been covered by Jack White's band The Dead Weather in 2009 as the B-side to single track Hang You from the Heavens.

It was also heavily sampled in 2002 on the mash-up track "Freak Like Me" by Sugababes, blending the song's melody with the lyrics of the Adina Howard song "Freak Like Me."; Numan has been quoted on more than one occasion expressing his approval of the result which, like the original, reached number 1 in the UK singles charts.

Tubeway Army drummer Jess Lidyard is Gary Numans Uncle.

Gary Numan was first known to the public under the stage name "Valerian".

Dramatis were a British synthpop band from the early 1980s, the band was made of the original members of Gary Numan's backing band. They formed in 1981 following Gary Numan's announced retirement.

NEW RELEASE : The Quiet Man - John Foxx

You can now pre-order John Foxx - The Quiet Man from Townsend Records.
It is due for release on the 27th July.

"This spoken word album runs for just under an hour and features Justin Barton's voiceover on five Quiet Man stories written by John Foxx. The CD also includes new piano music written and performed by Foxx especially for this release, along with a 16 page booklet of new B&W images by the artist.

'The origins of the novel are firmly cinematic,' states Foxx of his ongoing Quiet Man project. 'I found an old grey suit in a charity shop in the 1970s. Over the years, I got some friends to wear the suit in various locations in London. I filmed them just walking or sitting in cafes or apartments. As I did this, The Quiet Man story began to emerge. It's about London becoming overgrown, about the suit being alive somehow, and the way cities can alter us – and our memories.'"

John Foxx will be making an appearance at the Apple Store, Regent Street, London on Friday the 24th July at 5pm BST, John will read extracts from The Quiet Man with an introduction by Mark Gatiss from the League Of Gentlemen. It is a free event.

You can also read more Quiet Man stories such as Astronaut and The Unfinished Boy and buy Quiet Man art prints on www.thequietman.co.uk.

Andy Hughes - many reports get age wrong

Seems plenty of sites seem to have reported the age of the late DJ and Orb member as 44. I often find it hard to work out how some of these people are in a job, if you cannot get the facts right, then don't bother, leave it to someone who can.

Andy Hughes was born 11th November 1965 and died 12th June 2009, please do the sums.

Andy Hughes wiki
Andy Hughes @ discogs

Links to a few of the sites that obviously don't check the facts before typing.

Here, here, and here, unfortunately this list is not exhaustive, but with the Internet being what it is, once one gets it wrong, you will find that many follow.

That said whether it's reported as 43 or 44, he still was far too young and left way before his time, RIP Andy Hughes :(.

TRIVIA : DAVID BOWIE

David Bowie's peculiar mismatched eyes are the result of his hitting his head on the ground during a schoolyard fight over a girl.

David Bowie was born David Robert Jones on January 8, 1947 (22:59hrs 0.5W (Sun in Capricorn) if you wish to be exact), he changed it to David Bowie in 1966.

David Bowie's famous 'Major Tom' silver suit which he wore in the 'Love You Till Tuesday' film was purchased from Dandie Fashions in the Kings Road, Chelsea, London

David appears, albeit uncredited, on The Rolling Stones album 'It's Only Rock 'N' Roll'

David appears in the lyrics to the BBC series 'Only Fools and Horses', the lyrics are :

"We've got some half price cracked ice and miles and miles of carpet tiles
T.V.s, deep freeze and David Bowie LP's
Ball games, gold chains, whatsnames, pictures frames and leather goods
And Trevor Francis tracksuits from a mush in Shepherds Bush
Bush, bush, bush, bush, bush, bush, bush...
No income tax, no V.A.T.
No money back, no guarantee
Black or white, rich or poor
We'll cut prices at a stroke...
God bless Hooky Street
Viva Hooky Street
Long live Hooky Street
C'est magnifique, Hooky Street
Magnifique, Hooky Street
Hooky Street (fade)"

The middle section of 'Move On' on the Lodger album is 'All The Young Dudes' played backwards.

There were two versions of 'The Buddha Of Suburbia' promo video shot in St. Matthews Drive, Bromley, one featuring David 'smoking' and the other 'not smoking'

The credits on the Low album include 'backing vocals by Peter and Paul' who are in fact Brian Eno and Mary Hopkin.

The photograph taken for the cover of the album Pin Ups featuring Twiggy (real name Leslie Hornby) and David was originally intended to be for the front cover of fashion magazine Vogue. When they sent photographer Justin De Villeneuve (real name Nigel Davies) to photograph Ziggy and Twiggy she was tanned and David was his then usual pallid self, so the make-up artist gave them both masks. David liked the photograph and asked to use it for his next album instead. Told that Vogue would sell 80,000 copies and the album about a million, De Villeneuve sensibly agreed.

The photograph that appears on the front cover of Iggy Pop's 'The Idiot' album was taken by David himself. The pose was inspired from the Erich Heckel painting entitled 'Roquairol'.
